5 Questions with Businessman and Entrepreneur Shawn Burcham (Missouri State)
Interview
Brother Burcham is the Founder & CEO of Pro Food Systems, Inc., a 100% employee-owned food and equipment company with over 1,200 branded food service locations.
Why did you choose to become a Sigma Nu?
I chose Sigma Nu because of a friend who introduced me to the Fraternity. He took me to an IM softball practice before recruitment, and I immediately liked the guys and the atmosphere. I had a passion for competing on the ball field, and joining Sigma Nu allowed me to continue doing that while also forming friendships with great people.
What do you value most about your experience and membership?
I would not have met my wife (now 29 years) if it wasn’t for Sigma Nu. The Fraternity also instilled essential social and leadership skills that have been invaluable throughout my life. I learned the importance of Love, Truth, and Honor, and these values have guided my personal growth and decision-making.
What advice do you have for soon-to-be graduating brothers preparing to enter the workforce?
I would offer the following advice: First, always strive to be the hardest worker in the room. Show up before everyone else, put in the extra effort, and work both smarter and harder than your peers. Second, be willing to stay later than everyone else, demonstrating your dedication and commitment to your work. Third, be coachable and open to learning from others. Embrace feedback and use it as an opportunity for growth. Additionally, maintain a positive attitude in all situations. Doing so goes a long way in building strong relationships and fostering a healthy work environment. Finally, find something you are truly passionate about and pursue it wholeheartedly.
What have you not done, yet, as a Sigma Nu brother, that you want to do and why?
At 52 years old and as a Founder and CEO of multiple companies, I have been incredibly busy throughout my career. However, if I ever find myself slowing down, I would love to find ways to give back more to Sigma Nu. Whether it's mentoring younger members, supporting the fraternity's initiatives, or engaging in alumni activities, I believe there is still more I can contribute to the Fraternity.
How has your experience in Sigma Nu impacted your career?
The social skills and team-building experiences I gained through the fraternity have been instrumental in my professional life. Sigma Nu taught me how to effectively communicate, collaborate, and work with diverse groups of people. These skills have been invaluable throughout my career.
Furthermore, my involvement in Sigma Nu has allowed me to maintain connections with other fraternity brothers who have gone on to achieve similar levels of professional success. Being able to network and share experiences with fellow Founders and CEOs has provided me with additional opportunities for growth and collaboration.
In summary, my membership in Sigma Nu has not only provided me with lifelong friendships and the chance to meet my wife but has also equipped me with the social and leadership skills necessary for a successful career.
