Letter from the editor
Our Fraternity, like all institutions, had no immunity from the challenges of the global COVID-19 pandemic. In just a few short weeks, beginning in March 2020, collegiate members across the continent were sent home, campuses shuttered save for essential operations, and academic pursuits moved online. Our Headquarters office instituted remote operations. The 69th Grand Chapter was postponed for a year and then conducted virtually for the first time in our history. All operations evolved to meet Sigma Nu’s needs, changes in campus and community policies, and changing health guidance. Alumni canceled longstanding annual traditions and postponed significant milestone events. Even The Delta was impacted as staff resources were shifted to lead Sigma Nu’s response to the most disruptive crisis since World War II. After the emergent response, production timelines had to be extended due to shortages in printing material and personnel.
In the face of these challenges, the Legion of Honor not only persevered but ensured our vital Mission was not disrupted. Our brotherhood rose to meet this moment; today, Sigma Nu is stronger because of the selfless service and Mission commitment of our brothers, including collegiate officers and members, alumni volunteers, and staff.
This issue of The Delta tells, in part, the story of our continuity in the midst of crisis. In two riveting pieces, from former Director of Communications Drew Logsdon (Western Kentucky), you will learn about the Fraternity’s pandemic response in the early months, and you’ll travel back more than 100 years when the Legion of Honor encountered its first global pandemic.
You’ll be inspired by another story of fraternal excellence and perseverance as you read about Zeta Xi (UC Davis) Chapter’s journey from the dark days of closure to re-establishment and to becoming a perennial Rock Chapter.
As always, The Delta spotlights many outstanding alumni and chapter achievements and news. This issue also includes a report of our award recipients for 2020 and 2021 and our Foundation’s annual donor report for the last two fiscal years. Recognizing these dedicated and exceptional brothers is a special duty of The Delta; The Legion of Honor is forever grateful to each of them for advancing our honorable Mission.
We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. We welcome your feedback and ideas for stories we should consider for a future issue. Letters to the editor, comments, and general feedback can be sent to news@sigmanu.org
