Community Service & Philanthropic Achievement
The Community Service and Philanthropy Awards recognize chapters for their significant contributions to community service and philanthropic organizations and for having the highest per member average contributions in either service hours or philanthropic dollars.
2019 Community Service Contribution Award
Theta Alpha (South Florida) Chapter
With an impressive per member, per semester average of over 30.3 hours of service contributed over the course of the academic year, Theta Alpha (South Florida) Chapter has truly embraced the idea of lending the Helping Hand. One of the chapter’s primary service efforts was established through a partnership the chapter created with a local service organization to perform monthly beach cleanups at the Courtney Campbell Causeway. The chapter’s service events were hosted from September 2018 through April 2019 and featured brothers maintaining the local beaches in the Tampa Bay area. Each service activity featured instruction and education from an organization volunteer to teach the brothers about the importance and impact of their service work. In addition to the chapter’s events, many brothers from the Theta Alpha chapter are involved in their own individual service efforts benefiting organizations such as the Moffit Cancer Center, USF Botanical Gardens, and Habitat for Humanity.
2019 Philanthropy Contribution Award
Epsilon Xi (Mississippi) Chapter
At a chapter size of over 200 men, Epsilon Xi (Mississippi) Chapter secured this year's award with a staggering per member philanthropic contribution of $352 per member per semester. During the Spring 2019 semester, Epsilon Xi Chapter raised and donated $190,000 through the chapter’s 29th Annual Charity Bowl event. Each year, Epsilon Xi chapter selects a person living with paralysis as the primary recipient of the chapter’s fundraising effort. Charity Bowl, since its inception, has accumulated over $1.85 million dollars for its recipients. This year, the chapter selected Thomas Guest, a sophomore and member of Sigma Chi at Mississippi State who suffered a spinal cord injury on November 29, 2017 in an ATV accident. Through the chapter’s fundraising effort, Epsilon Xi was also able to make a financial impact to several important causes. $70,000 was donated to Thomas Guest, $25,000 was donated to the Manning Family Fund and the Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital, $25,000 was donated to the William Magee Center for Student Wellness Education, and the remainder was donated to various local charitable organizations such as the Oxford Foodbank.
