Lexington, Va. – In November 1990, Sigma Nu Fraternity investigated allegations of hazing activities related to the Upsilon Chapter of the Fraternity at the University of Texas – Austin. As a result, Sigma Nu Fraternity’s board of directors revoked the charter of the Upsilon Chapter, resulting in the dormancy of the chapter.
“Sigma Nu Fraternity was founded in direct opposition to the abhorrent practice of hazing,” said Executive Director Brad Beacham, “and hazing remains prohibited by the Fraternity today. Hazing defies our principles and our mission to develop ethical leaders. It is not tolerated by Sigma Nu Fraternity.”
Headquartered in Lexington, Virginia, Sigma Nu Fraternity was founded in 1869 at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. The Fraternity currently has 165 chapters and colonies and has initiated more than 235,000 members since its founding.
